The town of Elkin used its Blackboard Connect service on Friday to notify residents, Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital, and other affected businesses in the northern and eastern portion of Elkin to conserve water while they were fixing the broken water line on Bridge Street.

Only select areas in Elkin were notified on Friday. Most residents did not learn of the alert because they were not within the route of the pipeline.

“The western and southern portions of town are on a different system/water tank,” said Lloyd Payne, Elkin town manager.

Blackboard Connect messaging system is cloud-based software enabling town officials to quickly deliver critical messages, including emergency alerts and town announcements, via phone, text and email often pinpointing the alert right down to a street.

According to Payne, the alert system for the completed pipe repair was successful.

Residents who are interested in receiving town notifications through its connect access portal may visit the town’s website at www.elkinnc.org. Residents can manage their message settings, including their preferred language, mode of contact and specific message topics they wish to receive.
