JONESVILLE — Multiple patients were transported to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center following a two-car collision on I-77 Wednesday morning.

Yadkin County EMS Director Keith Vestal said the accident occurred around the 81-mile marker in the southbound lane, which is between the N.C. 67 interchange and Center Road overpass.

Four individuals had to be extricated from the vehicles and were transported to the hospital. One patient was transported via AirCare.

The accident involved Gerald Newton Minnich from McConellsburg, Pennsylvania, in a Smart Car and Lisa Shoemaker from Hamptonville in a minivan with her husband, Michael Shoemaker, and her mother, Judy Whitaker.

According to Trooper J.S. Ratliss with the North Carolina Highway Patrol, the accident occurred when Minnich attempted to merge into the right-hand lane and failed to see Lisa Shoemaker’s van. The impact caused both vehicles to lose control and leave the road to the right. Both vehicles struck the embankment and were overturned.

“It was a pretty nasty wreck,” said Ratliss. “Mr. Minnich’s car ended up in the woods on its top. It was like a big roll cage.”

All passengers had to be extricated from their vehicles and Minnich had to be transported out by helicopter.

Shoemaker and her passengers have been reported to be in stable and good condition in the hospital. Minnich is being taken to surgery for severe abdominal and head trauma, but he’s reported to also be in stable condition, Ratliss said.
