The Yadkin Valley United Fund (YVUF) announced plans to raise $150,000 by Thanksgiving Friday night at Grissom Stadium during halftime of the Elkin/North Surry football game.

The YVUF serves the communities of Arlington, Jonesville, Elkin, Ronda, Mountain Park, Traphill, Thurmond and State Road, all in the Tri-County area. Last year, the organization raised $138,000, and its ambition to increase the goal was well met.

“Everybody’s been very receptive and positive and very helpful, and that’s what the community is supposed to be. That’s what Yadkin Valley Strong is,” YVUF Executive Director David Steelman said. “We do three scholarships, one each at East Wilkes, Starmount and Elkin, and it takes a lot of money.”

Steelman said he and the YVUF are united by one goal — to help those who are less fortunate through helping non-profit agencies.

“We’re just doing the right thing because we’re that kind of community,” Ann Ashman, president of the YVUF Board of Directors, said. “We absolutely, as individuals here who have the means and need to support, we absolutely need to do that. Their need is greater today than it was five, 10, 15, 20 years ago because of economic factors.”

Although last year the YVUF was just shy of reaching its goal of $140,000, the leaders are ambitious to not only beat last year’s goal, but increase it.

“We’re full of enthusiasm, we have great leadership, and we will make our goal,” Ashman said.

While the plans were announced on Friday, Dine Out for the Fund week finished up on Saturday night with 14 different restaurants showing support.

“We’ve had a huge response this week on the Dine Out for the Fund… In the first part of September letters will go out and we’ll be reaching out, and we plan to have our campaign wrapped up before Thanksgiving so we can say thank you to everybody,” Ashman said.

One of the first big events for this year will be the 2015 Irons in the Fire Golf Tournament on Sept. 10. Tournament proceeds will go towards the YVUF. For more information, visit the yadkinvalleyunitedfund.org.
