A public hearing was held at Monday night’s meeting of the Yadkinville commissioners in regard to the rezoning of a property off Mackie Road from Rural Residential to Light Manufacturing. No speakers came forward and the board approved the rezoning. Also approved on Monday was the annexation of an unaddressed lot off Service Road and a lot at 240 Sharon Drive.
Yadkinville Finance Officer Dina Reavis addressed the board to update it on a tax refund that will be available to several area residents who own property that is only partly within the town limits. A number of residents were overcharged on property taxes for their entire lot, some of which is outside the town limits. All those affected have received letters instructing them to contact the town of Yadkinville to request a refund.
Several budget items, including $5,000 for the Yadkin Arts Council, transfer of drug funds to the general fund and updated tax value refunds, were all approved on the consent agenda.
The board also approved interim town manager Perry Williams to trade in an older track loader in order to purchase a new piece of equipment.
Williams addressed the board in regard to a project to build a new sidewalk on Lee Avenue. Easements already have been signed by property owners and they were initially expected to receive payment in July. Due to a delay of approval from the North Carolina Department of Transportation, those who sold easements to the town for the sidewalk project are now expected to be paid sometime this month.
Republic Services, which provides the trash and recycling pick-up for the town, has suggested that the recycling day of pick-up be moved to Wednesday. As not all the members of the board were present on Monday, that item was tabled for another meeting.
At the close of Monday’s meeting Mayor Hubert Gregory spoke briefly about the recent retirement of town tax collector Joy Hutchens and the wonderful job she did for the town during her 26 years there.
The next meeting of the Yadkinville town board is scheduled for Sept. 14 at 7 p.m.
