A new year has begun and for many that means making a resolution to get healthier and more active. The Yadkin Family YMCA can aid individuals with their fitness goals. During the month of January, the Yadkin Family YMCA is waiving the joining fee to help folks kick of the new year and get started on those resolutions.

New members can join any branch of the YMCA of Northwest North Carolina with a $0 joining fee for a limited time through January.

Now, members of the YMCA of Northwest North Carolina can access any location, as well as YMCAs across North Carolina and the Gateway YWCA in Winston-Salem. Members belong to the branch they use more than 50 percent of the time, but can visit other facilities as part of their membership. Details about the program can be found on the YMCA’s website at ymcanwnc.org/MyYisEveryY.

Membership at the Y provides access to pool space, hundreds of group exercise class offerings, gym space, racquetball courts, as well as specialty programs including Hot Yoga, CrossFit at three locations, Les Mills GRIT, and state-of-the-art Training Centers at various locations. Members also receive discounts on programs such as youth sports, summer camp, and swim lessons.

“At the Y, we are committed to helping members reach their individual goals in the New Year,” said Curt Hazelbaker, president and chief executive officer of the YMCA of Northwest North Carolina. “When you join the Y, you are joining a community. We have a shared commitment and belief in nurturing the potential of children, promoting healthy living and fostering a sense of social responsibility.”

The Y also supports new members in making healthy changes with uFit appointments. Offered at no cost for new members, uFit is a three-session program that provides individuals with the tools and resources they need to succeed. Trained staff help new members set attainable goals, create an easy-to-follow plan, and provide additional support.

James Sheek is a recent success story from the Yadkin Family YMCA. Sheek used the Y periodically, but when his daughter started swimming at the Y this past fall, he began to get more involved as well.

“I really didn’t have any more excuses for not getting in shape,” Sheek said. “After observing some of the classes from the walking track and being encouraged by some of my friends in the classes to join them, I decided to try the ME class. I was hooked! For 30 minutes each class session I am able to forget about everything else I have to do and just focus on me. Forty pounds later, I am on my way to being a healthier, stronger me. I look forward to my evening workouts each day. There is no feeling like walking out of class tired, sore, soaked in sweat and feeling great. I have a new appreciation for the Y and the programs they offer — and what they are doing for me.”

The YMCA of Northwest North Carolina includes 16 locations in Forsyth, Stokes, Davie, Yadkin, Iredell, Wilkes and Alexander counties. The $0 joining fee special applies to all levels of membership ranging from teen to household with dependents. Visit www.ymcanwnc.org to find more information.
