It’s the season of giving, and the Elkin Recreation & Parks is showing its generosity in more ways than one.

The 25-acre park is offering special discount packages for fitness room and gymnasium use, meaning families can save up to $450 dollars. Normally, for residents of Elkin, a yearly pass for an individual costs $200 dollars, while for a family, the cost is $300. For non-residents, the cost is $400 dollars per individual, and $600 per family. From now until Jan. 31, yearly passes are 25 percent off for individuals or families. In-town individuals will only have to pay $150 dollars per person, or $300 per family. Out of town residents will pay $300 per individual, or $450 per family. Passes must be paid in full at time of purchase and are non-transferable.

With the new year right around the corner, resolutions are common, but the problem is, for one reason or another, many people don’t stick to them. According to a Stephen Dubner and Steven Levitt, authors of Freakanomics, people who buy an annual membership to a health club overestimate by more than 70 percent how much they’ll actually use it. However, being unhealthy comes with a higher price than just dollars and cents, but with a reduced rate, Elkin Recreation & Parks is offering the opportunity to keep members’ bodies and their wallets well-maintained.

Nationwide fitness clubs like Anytime Fitness, Planet Fitness and. can cost upwards to $400 dollars per year, but Elkin Recreation & Parks offers much more than a gym. Members get access to eight lighted tennis court, outdoor pool, indoor basketball courts, among many other perks.

Located at 399 Highway 268 West, the parks and rec facility features a walking trail, a playground, two picnic shelters and a band shelter. In addition, there is a walking trail still in progress that will connect Stone Mountain to Pilot Mountain.

In addition, SilverSneakers and Silver & Fit Programs allow senior citizens to go out and stay fit at a reduced rate. SilverSneakers meets twice a week, and is a nine-stage workout to keep people moving. The Elkin Recreation Center is accepting entry to the facility through Silver & Fit. Eligible seniors can utilize the cardio fitness room, weight room, gymnasium, as well as the SilverSneakers classes.
