As the beginning of the new school year approaches, do not forget the library is a valuable resource. Computers, books, magazines, newspapers, NC LIVE as well as lending of resources from other NC Cardinal libraries are all accessible and available for use. A part-time tax coordinator for the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program is needed for the Yadkin County Public Library for the upcoming tax season. This position will run from November 2015 through mid-April 2016. Hours are Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., with an average of 10 to 15 hours per week. A stipend will be paid once the program is over. Training will be provided in obtaining necessary certifications and in preparing tax returns. Computer skills and excellence in communication with the public are highly desired. Preschool Storytime will resume at 10 a.m. on Thursday. Storytime programs are for preschoolers, ages 2 to 5 years old, providing an educational and enjoyable reading experience along with age-appropriate crafts.

Ed Gregory will be at the Yadkin County Public Library on Sept. 21 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. collecting information from Yadkin County veterans and their families for the book, “A Collection of Yadkin County Veterans: All Gave Some, Some Gave All.” Any information, photos, etc. from the Revolutionary War until today will be taken. If you are a veteran or have a family member that served or is serving, provide the following information: branch of service, wars involved in and any other information related to their service; pictures, in uniform or during tours of duty, grave or tombstone; birth, marriage and death information and any stories or information of interest about the service member. Salisbury VAMC’s Rural Health Team will be at the library and providing free flu shots for veterans on Sept. 21 from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Free flu shots will be offered to all veterans. NC Works, formerly Employment Security Commission, staff are available for job assistance at the Yadkin County Public Library each day of the week. Hours available are Monday and Thursday 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday and Wednesday 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Friday 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. They will be closed from noon to 1 p.m. for lunch, subject to change, depending on demand. Services include job searching, filing for unemployment, creating a resume, job training and skills development. For questions or additional assistance, contact them at 336-786-4169.

If you are you interested in tracing your family roots or need help in learning to use Ancestry.com, the library offers a free workshop, with volunteers, J.E. Brown and Patricia Rogers. Classes are now being offered on Tuesdays at 11 a.m. or Thursdays at 1 p.m. at the Yadkin County Public Library. In addition, all NWRL libraries offer free access to the Ancestry.com Library Edition throughout this year. No advanced registration is required and all workshops are free and open to the public. Come join us for an informative session.

A knitting/crocheting class series is being offered at the library on Tuesdays from noon to 1 pm. Participants will begin with learning the basic knitting/crocheting stitches and making a beginner scarf or dishcloth. Classes are taught by Michelle Spillman of Yadkinville. Knitting classes are free and open to the public with all materials provided. No advanced registration is required. Already know how to knit or crochet? You can still join us to collaborate and share ideas, techniques and patterns.

The Yadkin County Public Library will be closed on Monday in observance of the Labor Day holiday. The library will reopen at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday. The library will be closed on Sept. 25 for staff development. The library will reopen at 8:30 a.m. on Sept. 28. Yadkin County Public Library is a member of the Northwestern Regional Library system, comprised of libraries in Alleghany, Stokes, Surry and Yadkin counties. The library’s normal operating hours are as follows: Mondays and Thursdays 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
