ELKIN — For the second time in as many meetings, the Falcons had rival Elkin’s number on the road.

After handing the Buckin’ Elks their lone Mountain Valley Conference loss in their last match-up at the end of the 2012-13 season, Forbush kicked off their 2013-14 campaign with a big 60-50 victory Tuesday night.

After falling behind in the third quarter, the Falcons rode a 13-2 run in the fourth quarter to secure the double-digit triumph.

Elkin jumped out to a 23-18 lead late in the first half and took a 23-20 advantage into the locker room. Eric Kelly scored five quick points to push the lead out to 28-22 early in the third quarter.

Stephen Gentry converted a three-point play with 5:14 left in the frame to kick-start the decisive 13-2 run for the Falcons.

Mason Doub scored 11 of his 13 points in the final quarter, while Bryson Lee sank 5-of-6 free throw attempts to seal the victory.

Senior Barrett Hennings powered the Falcons with a game-high 23 points with Doub and Lee finishing in double figures.

Forbush then ran into a pair of Northwest Conference powerhouses in the East Surry Thanksgiving Invitational Tournament over weekend, falling to Mount Airy and East Surry in back-to-back games.

A late first-half run by the Granite Bears turned a close contest into a runaway victory with Mount Airy cruising to the 71-50 win Friday in the opener.

The Cardinals, who advanced to the 1A Final Four last season, came out firing Saturday scoring 53 points in the first half of a 93-43 triumph.

Ten Falcons scored in the contest, led by Hunter Chapman’s team-high nine points. Doub tacked on six points, while Gentry added four.

Forbush returns to the court after the holiday with three games against former Mountain Valley Conference foes. Forbush takes on West Wilkes, Wilkes Central and East Wilkes this week.
