Additional highlights of the conference included the Keynote Speaker, Dr. Ben Carson, Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital and author of Gifted Hands and “Think Big.”
Dr. Carson shared the story of his childhood dream of becoming a physician. This seemed impossible growing up in a single parent home, in dire poverty, making poor grades, having a bad temper, and a low self esteem. Carson’s mother with only a 3rd grade education decided to “turn off” the television and challenge her sons to read.
She had them read at least two books per week from the public library. Carson himself started to see his life begin to turn around. He challenged the HOSA Delegation to “put down” their electronics and read. Carson also challenged the HOSA Delegates to work toward a common goal improve the nation.
Another conference guest speaker was Catherine Oakar from the Department of Health and Human Services show spoke on the Affordable Healthcare Act and urged the delegates to learn more about the Affordable Healthcare Act by visiting Healthcare.gov.
Attendance at the 36th Annual HOSA National Leadership Conference would not be possible without donations and financial support.
