Dear Ms. George,
Thank you for your letter and the time and effort you spend on recycling. Your later stated that on January 12, 2013 while taking your recyclables to a recycling center that you witnessed a recycle container being compacted with the other trash. In addition your letter asked the following questions: “Is this Yadkin County’s procedure for recycling? How long has this been going on? Are Yadkin County Citizens being duped? Is this another “cost saving” measure being used in Yadkin County? Will the next step be to close the recycling centers because it is easier to just compact everything? Will we be asked to pay more taxes because we need a larger landfill?”
The purpose of this letter is to respond to the questions raised in your letter.
1. Is this Yadkin County’s procedure for recycling?
Yadkin County has contracts with recyclers for recyclable plastics, paper, cardboard, aluminum, electronics, steel cans, newspaper/magazines, clear/brown/green glass, used tires, scrap metal, used oil, and empty pesticide containers. Most recyclable items can be taken to the collection sites; however tires, electronics, used oil, scrap metal, and empty pesticide containers must be taken to the Transfer Site/Landfill. From the collection sites, the recycling is picked up, sorted and placed in the appropriate trailer provided by the contracted recycler at the Transfer Site/Landfill. County employees drive to the collection sites and pick up recyclables and household trash often in two separate trips; the same truck is used for both transports. Yadkin County does not currently have an active landfill. All solid waste is sorted and transported to other locations. Once the recycle trailers are full the recycler picks up the trailers and provides empty ones to be filled.
However, it had been a long standing practice that if unusual circumstances arise that require consolidating recyclables and trash the drivers have done this due to lack of space and trash overflow. We were not aware of this practice and it will not continue.
2. How long has this been going on?
The above stated procedures have been going on for a very long time.
3. Are Yadkin County Citizens being duped?

5. Will the next step be to close the recycling centers because it is easier to just compact everything?

First Yadkin County does not use property tax dollars to fund the Solid Waste Enterprise Fund. Fee’s are assessed as a user fee in the amount of $60 dollars a year per household. We are prohibited by law to maintain an enterprise fund with property tax dollars.
Second, Yadkin County does not operate a landfill. Yadkin County contracts with Republic Services to operate a transfer station for solid waste. Waste transfer stations are facilities where solid waste is unloaded from collection vehicles and briefly held while it is reloaded onto a larger long-distance transport vehicle for shipment to landfills or other treatment or disposal facilities. By combining the loads of several individual waste collection trucks into a single shipment, communities save money on the labor of operating costs of transporting the waste to a distant disposal site. This can also reduce the cost vehicular trips traveling to and from the disposal site.
